One of our new songs, The Birth and Death of Stars was a finalist in the Queensland Music Awards 2020. This is our second time as finalists since bringing home the award for best World song in 2015 and 2016 for songs from our album Ghosts.
This latest song is from our album of the same name which will be released later this year. Pauline wrote the lyrics after some beautifully frank conversations about life and death with her grandmother who lost mobility in recent years. The lyrics weave Pauline’s feelings about her grandmother, her reflections about euthanasia and draws parallels between the life of stars and life here on Earth. The instrumental contributions by Goran include melodies reminiscent of Balkan traditional songs and are set to an Iraqi 10/8 rhythm.
She calls me to her bedside
An evening in September
She has been waiting to leave
This life in slow motion
Like leftover confetti
We hold in our hands
Every night in the ether
A star dies
Fragments of life that slip away
Without anyone noticing
For her, it’s a winter that never ends
That permeates her bones
In the dark she dreams she’ll be carried away
By the sea and its technicolor waves
Like leftover confetti
That we hold in our hands
Every night in the ether
A star dies
In the dark she dreams she’ll float away
With the sea and its technicolor waves
Like leftover confetti
That we hold in our hands
Every day in the ether
A star dies
